Speaker Matt Hall is standing up for more than 700,000 Michiganders whose voices were pushed aside by an opaque government process.
Hall appointed Rep. Mike Harris to lead a new House select committee investigating the review of the Americans for Citizen Voting petition. The citizen-led initiative submitted 709,841 signatures in support of strengthening election security by requiring proof of citizenship, photo identification and regular reviews of Michigan’s voter rolls.
Despite submitting more than a quarter-million signatures above the required threshold, the proposal was prevented from advancing to the November ballot after the Board of State Canvassers deadlocked based on a review of only 1,000 signatures.
Under Speaker Hall’s leadership, House Republicans are demanding transparency and accountability. The committee will investigate how signatures were selected and reviewed, whether the process was fair and what reforms are necessary to ensure citizens are never again silenced by an unaccountable bureaucracy.
Speaker Hall has made it clear: When hundreds of thousands of Michiganders demand action, their government must listen.
