Speaker Matt Hall and House Republicans voted to rebuild the runway at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, a critical step toward strengthening Michigan’s military readiness and securing a new mission for the base. The effort reflects the strong partnership between President Trump and Speaker Hall, who have worked together to ensure Selfridge remains a cornerstone of national defense in the region.
Selfridge plays a vital role in protecting Michigan and supporting American military operations. Rebuilding the runway will help guarantee the base’s future and ensure Michigan continues to contribute to the strength of America’s armed forces.
Speaker Hall made clear that this effort is about far more than infrastructure. It is about standing with the men and women in uniform who protect our state and our nation. The new Selfridge mission is the result of cooperation between President Trump and Speaker Hall, and House Republicans are urging Democrats to stop playing politics and put the measure up for a vote.
Several Republican lawmakers from Macomb County have been instrumental in the effort. Ron Robinson, Alicia St. Germaine, Jay DeBoyer, and Joe Aragona worked closely with Speaker Hall to advance the project and deliver real results for their communities and for the service members stationed at Selfridge.
Yet despite the clear importance of the project, some Democrats continue to stand in the way. Representative Reggie Miller voted against the proposal, and Senate Democrats Winnie Brinks and Kevin Hertel have so far refused to bring the issue forward for a vote.
Speaker Hall’s message is simple. Michigan should not be playing politics with national security or with the service members who protect our communities. It is time for Democrats to put the proposal up for a vote and stand with the men and women who defend our country.
