Shannon Dare Wayne says she wants to lower costs, but the Milan City Council on which she serves approved higher garbage and water rates in June 2025. Garbage collection alone increased by $5.26 a month—another $63.12 a year out of residents’ pockets. Families deserve to know how her promises of lower costs square with the higher bills approved by her council.
The Sun Times News reported that Milan City Council approved a fee schedule in June 2025 that increased garbage rates by $5.26 per month—another $63.12 a year—and raised water rates. Officials said the garbage increase was needed to stabilize the city’s rubbish fund.
Now, Planet Detroit reports that Dare Wayne’s House campaign has received donations from unions supporting data centers, plus $12,250 from Elevate Michigan PAC, which has received DTE Energy contributions. Despite supporting safeguards and repealing data center tax breaks, Dare Wayne did not express support for a moratorium in her response to the publication.
Laura Perry supports a one-year pause to establish protections for communities, infrastructure and utility customers. And has been clear about making this push one of her first actions as State Representative.
For families already paying more for garbage collection and water, promises about lowering costs deserve scrutiny. Dare Wayne should explain how she would protect household budgets and whether she will support a data center pause while enforceable safeguards are put in place.
