Speaker Matt Hall and House Republicans are working to protect Michigan taxpayers from extreme policies that can be rushed through during lame duck legislative sessions with little transparency or public input. Hall is working on advancing reforms that would require stronger consensus before major policy changes can be passed at the last minute.
The concern is grounded in recent history. When Democrats previously held full control, lame duck sessions were used to push through controversial policies that many Michiganders opposed. These included attempts to raise taxes, reduced penalties for certain criminal offenses, and other policies widely viewed as extremely weak on crime.
Speaker Hall believes major changes that impact families, public safety, and the economy should not be passed behind closed doors in the final hours of a legislative session. What he’s proposing would ensure greater accountability and require broader agreement before significant laws are enacted.
This effort builds on the transparency reforms already delivered through the Hall Ethics Accountability and Transparency plan, which opened the door on insider deals and forced government to operate more openly. Speaker Hall is continuing that mission by ensuring that future lame duck sessions cannot be used to push through an extreme agenda without proper scrutiny.
House Republicans are making it clear that Michigan taxpayers deserve transparency, accountability, and laws that are debated in the open, not rushed through when the public is not watching.
