Shining a light on Michigan’s Politics

Michigan Democrats keep campaigning on affordability. Their Senate majority keeps leaving proposals to lower household costs without a vote.

As The Midwesterner reports, House-passed legislation to eliminate the state education property tax, repeal the real estate transfer tax, and reduce utility rates remains stalled in the Democratic-controlled Senate. House Republicans’ Project Lighthouse proposal would roll back utility rates by roughly $1 billion statewide. Those measures remain in the Government Operations Committee chaired by Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks.

Families cannot pay their bills with campaign promises. They need lawmakers willing to debate and vote on actual relief. House Republicans have advanced proposals to leave homeowners with more of their money and bring down utility bills. Senate Democrats have the power to bring those proposals forward.

If putting more money back in Michiganders’ pockets is truly the priority, giving these bills an up-or-down vote should be an easy place to start.
